Demi Lovato On Being LGBTQ

If you ask any Demi fan what they love the most about them, you’ll hear plenty of people say that it’s their transparency.

Demi Lovato has never been one to keep their private life out of the headlines, especially when it’s about their sexuality and gender identity.

Demi has previously identified as being queer and sexually fluid, and on the Experience podcast with Joe Rogan, Demi opened up further about their identity.

When asked if Demi would identify themselves as pansexual, they replied, “Yeah, pansexual. I like anything, really”.

They also revealed that they don’t know if they’re “going to end up with a guy” and said they “can’t really even see [myself] getting pregnant.

I’m so fluid now, and a part of the reason why I am so fluid is because I was super closeted off”.

Expressing Sexuality Through Music

Before Demi officially came out to the world, they admitted that they expressed their sexuality through their music. According to Demi, “there were times I wrote songs about girls that my fans thought I wrote about guys.”

They went on to say “I was sharing it with the world, and yet I wasn’t being completely obvious what I was talking about. Music was my safe space”.

One of Demi’s most iconic queer songs, Cool For The Summer, was released in 2015. The song became an instant hit and sparked rumors amongst the LGBTQ community about Demi’s sexuality.

In an interview with Allan Carr, Demi spoke openly about the song, saying, “I am not confirming, and I’m definitely not denying.”

“All of my songs are based off of personal experiences. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with experimentation at all”. However, Demi later came out, confirming the suspicions that the smash hit single arose.

Being Non-Binary: Demi’s Experience

In May 2021, Demi officially came out as nonbinary.

The singer came to Instagram to reveal their new identity, saying, “Today is a day I’m so happy to share more of my life with you all – I am proud to let you know that I Identify as nonbinary and will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward”.

Demi went on to say that “this has come after a lot of healing and self-reflective work. I’m still learning and coming into myself, and I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson”.

When Demi came out as nonbinary, they expressed that finding a label that fitted their identity had been difficult.

Being Non-Binary: Demi’s Experience

Coming out as nonbinary gave Demi the freedom they had been searching for and the confidence to show the world who they are.

Demi stated, “I realized it was time to let the world know that it feels word to me when I get called a ‘she’ or a ‘her’.

I understand that people might have a hard time adjusting to it because it is something new, but I want to encourage people to keep trying and that I understand that it’s a process to get used to.”

Learning More And Changing Pronouns

In August 2022, Demi opened up about changing their pronouns from they/them, to they/them and she/her.

The singer chose to quietly change their pronouns on Instagram before discussing their decision with the world.

Demi told Sprout that they chose to use both she/her and they/them pronouns because they have recently started to feel more feminine again.

According to Demi, their change of pronouns “represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering.”

Demi is not alone in their decision to use more than one set of pronouns.

Many nonbinary people use gender pronouns as well as they/them to reflect their own fluidity and expression; however, Demi has faced backlash from both inside and outside the LGBTQ community, and has been accused of ‘queer tourism.’

Some people believe that Demi’s change of pronouns is harmful and erases their nonbinary identity.

The term ‘queer tourism’ is used to describe a process whereby straight people adopt aspects of queer culture without actually being queer.

Demi’s change in pronouns also opened them up to criticism, with others describing them as ‘confused’ when using they/them and now back to ‘normal’ when using she/her pronouns.

Demi’s Experience And The Need For Change

The backlash that Demi Lovato received when they came out as nonbinary and then later changed their pronouns speaks volumes about the need for change.

Unfortunately, the ridicule and criticism that Demi received are experienced by thousands of nonbinary people every day.

Whether it comes from ignorance or a sheer hatred for LGBTQ people, society’s understanding of the use of pronouns, and the difference between sex and gender, still has a long way to go.

The struggle of trans and gender diverse people across the world is still real, with nonbinary people such as a Demi receiving a notable surge in ridicule and hate online.

People who are gender diverse frequently report receiving derogatory and hateful remarks from people both inside and outside the LGBTQ community.

Threats of violence are also rife, with some people even reporting experiences of physical abuse as a direct result of their gender.

The Bottom Line

Demi has been a part of the LGBTQ community for many years, and as their sexuality and gender expression continue to change and evolve, Demi has shared their experience with the world.

Although this has been a positive influence on many LGBTQ people, Demi hasn’t escaped criticism and hatred for their choice to be open and fluid.
