20 LGBTQ+ Thai Celebrities Making a Difference

As one of the most LGBTQ+ progressive countries in Asia, Thailand is generally a friendly place for people in the queer community.

It is the first country in Southeast Asia taking steps towards legalizing same-sex unions and currently has one of the largest recorded transgender communities in the world. Due to heavy backing from the Thai government, Thailand has also become a booming medical tourism destination for people seeking gender affirming care.

There is also much greater LGBTQ+ visibility in Thailand than in their more conservative neighbors.

Ladyboy cabarets which celebrate transgender performers have long been fixtures in the country’s colorful entertainment industry.

In the media, stories with queer themes have also seen a huge rise in demand in recent years. As of 2023, Thailand is one of the biggest producers globally of “Boys’ Love” (BL) dramas, a genre that focuses on romantic love between two male leads.

With public opinion towards the LGBTQ+ community continuing to become more favorable throughout the years, more LGBTQ+ Thai celebrities are finding the courage to come out publicly. 

Here are some inspiring Thai LGBTQ+ celebrities: 

Woody Milintachinda

Woody Milintachinda is one of the most recognizable faces in the Thai entertainment industry. He is an award-winning TV presenter and has interviewed international stars with the likes of Britney Spears, Will Smith, Hugh Jackman, and David Beckham just to name a few.

Nicknamed by his fans as the “Thai Ellen,” he is the host of The Woody Show which follows the popular American talk show’s format. The Woody Show is currently one of the most successful and influential talk shows in Thailand with thousands tuning in with every airing.

Milintachinda is also the founder of many of Thailand’s biggest music events like The Bangkok Countdown and the S20 Music Festival.

For all his contributions in entertainment, CNN named him a part of their list of Asia’s Top 100 Influential Personalities.

He came out as gay in an episode of The Woody Show and has been married to his husband since 2014. He is a very outspoken promoter of LGBTQ+ rights in Thailand and often speaks about the topic.

Anne Jakkaphong Jakrajutatip

Anne Jakrajutatip is a Thai media tycoon named by Forbes as the third richest transgender person in the world.

She is the founder and current CEO of JKN Global Group, one of Thailand’s largest multinational conglomerates. Through the media distribution arm of JKN Global Group, Jakrajutatip has acquired ownership of some of the biggest beauty pageants in the world namely: Miss Universe, Miss USA, and Miss Teen USA.

In 2019, she received the Asia Media Woman of the Year Award, marking her as the first transgender woman to receive the distinction. She was also included in the Bangkok Post’s list of “Women of the Year 2022.”

Aside from her various entrepreneurial ventures, Jakrajutatip is also a regular face in Thai television, appearing as a host in the Thai-versions of popular reality shows like Project Runway and Shark Tank.

She is a big advocate for transgender rights and established the LIFT Foundation or “Life Inspired for Transsexual Foundation” which offers support to the LGBTQ+ community and marginalized women.

Pompam Niti Chaichitathorn

Pompam Chaichitathorn is an award-winning TV presenter, actor, and producer. He is best known for hosting popular queer-centered reality programs like the travel and lifestyle show Toey Tiew Thai: The Route and late-night show Talk With Toey, which won him the Best Entertainment Presenter/Host award at the 22nd Asian Television Awards in 2017.

Being an openly gay man, he often drew from his own experience in his hosting.

He also has several notable acting credits under his name and has served as a producer for various films and television shows. 

Jennie Panhan

Like her co-host Pompam Chaichitathorn, Jennie Panhan became a household name because of her work in Toey Tiew Thai: The Route.

She has several notable acting credits under her belt and runs a successful YouTube channel where she often talks about her experiences as a transgender woman in Thailand.

She is an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and is a keen supporter of the Marriage Equality Bill. She has recently shared a video on her channel about her experience attending the most recent Bangkok Pride festival where she interviewed people on their views on marriage equality.

Godji Tachakorn Boonlupyanun

Another host of Toey Tiew Thai: The Route that is working hard for LGBTQ+ visibility is transgender media personality, Godji Boonlupyanun.

She is active in sharing her talents both in front and behind the camera. She has appeared in supporting roles for various films and series and has also worked as a producer for several of her projects.

Earth Katsamonnat Namwirote

Earth Namwirote shot into the Thai acting scene for his breakout role as one of the leads in the popular BL drama series Love by Chance and its sequel, A Chance to Love.

Being one of Thailand’s young rising stars, he continues to land other multi-faceted acting roles and never ceases to impress both his fans and critics.

As a graduate of one of Thailand’s top architecture schools, Namwirote has always had an affinity for aesthetics and pushing the limits of his creativity. He is passionate about fashion and loves experimenting with different outfits in his social media.

He has started his own clothing brand called CIELO where he shares his designs.

Namwirote is openly gay and has talked about how being open about his sexuality impacted him on his YouTube channel.

Poyd Treechada Petcharat

Often hailed as “Thailand’s Most Beautiful Trans Model,” Poyd Petcharat is one of Thailand’s most famous trans icons.

She started her career in the entertainment industry as a beauty queen, winning trans pageants like Miss Tiffany’s and Miss International Queen before going into acting.

She also tried her hand and found success in fashion modeling and has walked the runway for international luxury brands like Cartier and Louis Vuitton.

She is a big advocate for transgender rights and is passionate in spreading awareness for gender equality. She married her husband who she has known for two decades in early 2023.

Newyear Kitiwhut Sawutdimil

Ever since his landing his breakout role as one of the leads in the drama I Am Your King, Newyear Sawutdimilin has been very busy with booking other acting projects and running his various businesses.

He has an affinity for entrepreneurship and is the founder of two skincare brands: Newta Mins and Rise By Nur.

He identifies as bisexual and has been in a long-term relationship with former Channel [V] Thailand VJ, Both Chinsoponsap. The couple runs a successful Youtube channel together.

Aof Pongsak Rattanapong

Aof Rattanapong rose to fame as a contestant in popular Thai reality singing competition, Academy Fantasia. His distinct soulful singing style helped him become a fan favorite and led him to finishing strong as one of the contest’s finalists.

Since his time on Academy Fantasia, he has released several widely received albums and singles. He also has several acting credits under his name and was a contestant in the third season of Masterchef Celebrity Thailand.

He publicly came out as gay in 2013 and has included LGBTQ+ representation in his music videos.

Pauline Ngarmpring

Pauline Ngarmpring made history in 2019 as Thailand’s first transgender prime Minister candidate. 

A big part of her platform was giving a voice to marginalized LGBTQ+ Thais and creating safe queer spaces in the country.

Although she did not end up winning the elections, she continues to advocate for the Thai LGBTQ+ community. She regularly speaks publicly on LGBTQ+ rights and works with many Thai LGBTQ+ foundations and charities.

Fluke Natouch Siripongthon

Fluke Siripongthon is a widely recognized young Thai actor who achieved international fame for his acting performances in various Thai films and BL dramas notably, Until We Meet Again and My Bromance.

Aside from being an actor, Siripongthon is also a talented singer, launching his music career in 2020.

His debut single, Hidden, peaked at the #1 spot on iTunes Thailand and also charted in the Top 10 charts in Vietnam, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Philippines.

He has publicly stated that he is a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

Ten Tosatid Darnkhuntod

Ten Darnkhuntod is an openly gay actor and director.

Holding a masters in directing from the School of Visual Arts in New York, he made his directorial debut in 2016 for the series My Bromance.

Darnkhuntod is also an active athlete and fitness lover. He often shares workout inspiration content on social media and started his own energy drink brand, Ex10 Energy Drink.

Mew Suppasit Jongcheveevat

Mew Suppasit is one of the biggest personalities in the Thai entertainment industry.

He initially shot to fame for his role as Tharn in the popular Thai BL drama, TharnType: The Series. He continued to book big roles in Thai films and television series. His upcoming projects include the Thai adaptation of the critically-acclaimed Japanese series, Mr. Hiiragi’s Homeroom and a remake of the classic Thai musical, Mon Rak Luk Thung.

Following his successful acting stint, Mew also has a flourishing music career. His debut album, 365, made him the first Thai debut artist to be featured in both Billboard Music’s World Digital Song Sales chart and the Itunes Global Digital Artist Ranking.

During an interview where he was asked about his views on romantic love, Mew stated that the gender of his partner does not really matter to him, implying that he is part of the LGBTQ+ community.

Bruce Sirikorn Kananura

Before he made waves in the Thai entertainment industry, Bruce Kananurak originally trained as a competitive swimmer.

He is best known for his supporting role in BL hit, Lovely Writer. His acting skills have also been featured in several popular Thai dramas and he has also modeled for local brands in Thai fashion.

He is openly gay and often shares pictures of his dates with his boyfriend on social media.

Pangina Heals (Pan Pan Narkprasert)

Nicknamed the “RuPaul of Thailand,” Pangina Heals is one of the most recognized drag queens in Asia.

She was a contestant in RuPaul’s Drag Race: UK vs the World and is a co-host for the show’s Thai spinoff, Drag Race Thailand.

As a drag performer, she has performed in many shows both locally and internationally. She is often lauded as the ambassador of Thailand’s LGBTQ+ community.

Art Arya (Araya Indra)

Art Arya is another big name in the Thai drag community.

She co-hosts Drag Race Thailand with Pangina Heals and also appears as a master mentor in Thai reality modeling competition, The Face Thailand.

She is also a pioneer in the Thai fashion scene with over three decades worth of experience in fashion design. She has worked with many notable local and international fashion brands.

Gun Korawit Boonsri

Gun Boonsri is an openly gay Thai actor recognized for his roles in films and dramas like U Prince: The Series, Sotus S, and 2gether the Series.Since he entered the entertainment industry as a co-host of TV program Five Live Fresh, he has amassed hundreds and thousands of fans from Thailand and even has some dedicated fan clubs in other parts of Southeast Asia.

Porsch Apiwat Apiwatsayree

Porsch Apiwatsayree is an actor notably known for his role as Doctor Bright in Thai drama Together With Me and its sequel Together with Me, The Next Cahpter. Between his acting work, he also works as a flight attendant.

He shares a YouTube channel with his husband, which centers around their daily life as a gay couple living in Thailand.

Jeab Lalana Kongtoranin

The crowned winner of Miss Thailand 2006, Jeab Kongtoranin surprised many of her fans when she cut her long hair short and traded her heels and ball gowns for a much more androgynous look.

Despite speculation that she is coming out as transgender, she remained firm about her identity as a woman, but stated that she is open to dating both men and women.

After taking a break to finish her medical degree and residency, she returned to the entertainment industry in 2015 and since then has appeared in various TV series and films.

She is currently in a relationship with her girlfriend and often shares snippets of their life together on social media.

Plustor Pronpiphat Pattanasettanon

Plustor Pattanasettanon is an openly gay Thai actor who has had main roles in trending dramas such as Med in Love: The Series and FriendZone. He also has had supporting roles in many other popular dramas.

He has publicly shared that he is part of the LGBTQ+ community and has featured his boyfriend in his social media posts.

Even though Thailand is fairly open-minded towards the LGBTQ+ community, discrimination is still something that many LGBTQ+ Thai’s experience. As in many other countries, there are still certain prejudices that the LGBTQ+ community face on a daily basis.
